Speak Out for LGBT Health Care Reform!

Please join Equality Federation in the campaign to make sure that America’s health care planning includes our communities.  As a member of the National Coalition for LGBT Health, we urge you to let the Department of Health & Human Services know that LGBT people and our families, like all other Americans, should be part of planning for a healthier USA.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is currently asking for public comment on the development of Healthy People 2020 (HP 2020), which will serve as the federal government’s blueprint for a healthier nation for the decade between 2010 and 2020. Healthy People is crucial component of attracting attention, funding, and other resources to improving the health of the LGBT community.

The National Coalition for LGBT Health is asking advocates like you to step up and speak out about the importance of LGBT health issues by participating in the public comment period, which closes on December 31, 2009. The Department is counting on our community to comment on the need for a focus on LGBT health in 2010 and beyond, so make your voice heard!

The website for comments is here .

The Coalition suggests that comments include a short statement on the following important aspects of LGBT health and the Healthy People process:

  • Include gender identity alongside sexual orientation throughout HP 2020
  • Include sexual orientation and gender identity in all relevant target areas and objectives
  • Include a question about sexual orientation and gender identity on all major federal health surveys, particularly the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)

If you wish to comment specifically on particular target areas or objectives, go here
More information about each of these points is available from the National Coalition, and they would be happy to help you craft your comments to make a strong case for the development of a comprehensive evidence base on LGBT health disparities and LGBT inclusion throughout Healthy People 2020. They will also be glad to provide you with a detailed list of key target areas and objectives from Healthy People 2010 and the Healthy People 2020 development process.

For assistance with any comment, please contact Kellan Baker, Policy Associate at the National Coalition for LGBT Health, at kellan@lgbthealth.net or (202) 558-6828.

Let’s ring in a new year and a new decade of LGBT health advocacy in style:  Share your thoughts on LGBT inclusion in Healthy People 2020!
