Join TransOhio at Columbus’ Spirit Day and Candlelight Vigil

Be a Part of Spirit Day in Columbus and Attend the Candlelight Vigil

Stonewall Columbus will hold a candlelight vigil on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Gazebo at Goodale Park, 120 W. Goodale Street, in Columbus, Ohio. This event coincides with the newly created “Spirit Day”
which recognizes the loss of lives to suicide directly related to anti-gay bullying.

Purple in the LGBT rainbow flag represents “Spirit.” Come and join us as we show the spirit of the Columbus LGBT community. We will stand together to encourage people who are being bullied and harassed because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or
transgender to speak out and get help.

A short program will be held with speakers from our community and performances by Vox from the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus and Unecc. Resource materials will be on hand for distribution and a limited number of candles and “Spirit Day” purple ribbons will
be available at the park.

“It is very difficult for those who are suffering to reach out,” said Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus. “By holding this public event, it is our hope that we will encourage people who are being bullied and harassed because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender to speak out and get help.”

Stonewall Columbus serves the Central Ohio LGBT community by providing a community center and offering programming and services that enhance the well-being and visibility of our diverse community through discovery, affirmation and celebration.

3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium

The weekend of August 13-15, 2010, over 250 people converged on Columbus, Ohio to attend the 3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium. The weekend included the first Provider’s Day and focused on education and professional development for students, providers of Trans health, mental and legal services. The General Symposium’s keynote was given by S. Bear Bergman, Sing If You’re Glad To Be Trans — While the difficult narratives of trans life are valid and deserve our attention, is it not perhaps enough with the all-misery-all-the-time tranny channel? Being trans is not a reason for pity, scorn, shame, or apology. This lecture celebrates trans bodies, communities, awareness, sex, love, particular talents, successes and self-creation with a faultless logic and good humor that may just make you appreciate transfolks (or being trans) in a whole new way.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (Columbus)
We are currently seeking planning committee members for this year’s Columbus TDOR. TDOR is held in November. If you reside in Central Ohio and would like to be involved in this memorial, please email TransOhio@transohio.org for details. Committee will meet in Columbus. If you reside outside of Central Ohio, we’re working with organizations and groups in Northern and Southern Ohio to assist in their local TDOR. Email TransOhio@transohio.org for details.

Toledo Transgender Support Group
The meeting time for the Fall & Winter Toledo Transgender Support Group has changed from 2pm to 3pm. Remaining 2010 meeting dates are:

TransOhio Holiday Gatherings

Thanksgiving
TransOhio will once again be hosting a Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving day (Thursday, November 25, 2010).

This dinner is open to the entire Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay and Ally community. (kids are welcome!). RSVP’s are not required, but it will help us in our planning. There are no excuses to spend the day alone! Come early and stay late!

The Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be at 2pm, at the Center on High (Stonewall Columbus), located at 1160 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43201.

TransOhio will provide the turkey & and necessary paper plate-ware. Please bring a dish to share with others (and a serving spoon, fork or knife) and something to drink.

Christmas & New Year’s
We’ll be hosting some type of Christmas & New Year’s gathering as well. It’s a bit early for details, but we’re also looking for people who are interested in planning and organizing!

Registration now open for Third Annual TransOhio Transgender and Ally Symposium

Columbus, Ohio — May 22, 2010 — The 3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender and Ally Symposium, which will be held on the campus of Ohio State University from August 13-15, 2010, will feature over 70 workshops and seminars by local and nationally recognized presenters. Registration for this year’s Transgender and Ally Symposium is now open.

TransOhio, Ohio’s only statewide Transgender advocacy and community organization, has expanded this conference, which originally consisted of a single day just three years ago, to three full days of workshops, seminars and social events, including a day that is specifically set aside for medical, social service and legal providers. “This is the first year we will be hosting a Provider’s Day at our Symposium. We’re going to be able to offer continuing education units (CEUs) as we’ve partnered with The Ohio State University’s College of Social Work. Additionally, the GLBT Alumni Society – Scarlet & Gay and The Longaberger Alumni House have also been key partners in making this day come together,” said Shane Morgan, Founder and Chair of TransOhio. The General Symposium sessions, held both Saturday and Sunday, will occur onsite at the Ohio State University Multicultural Center at the Ohio Union.

“Recently, we’ve seen several established as well as new medical and legal providers stepping up to learn about the Transgender community and their needs and the issues that are specific to the community. Part of TransOhio’s mission is to provide opportunities to continue to develop qualified professionals that the Transgender community can seek out for services,” according to TransOhio Board Member Jacob Nash.  “People need to know that they have options and need to be able to select a professional who best fits an individual’s needs and works for them.”

Presentations, workshops and seminars will cover topics such as Health & Safety, Partners, Spouses & Family, Sex & Sexuality, Legal Issues & Employment, Religion and Spirituality, Education & Advocacy and Culture, Media and Arts.  Friday night events include a Meet & Greet and the Fabulously Fluid! gender-bending performance showcase. Saturday evening, TransOhio will host a special performance of local performer Sile P. Singleton’s – PAINT! A Transformative Project at the Columbus Performing Arts Center’s Shedd Theatre in Columbus.  PAINT! is set against the backdrop of a socially constructed notion that communities of color are “more homophobic than white communities,” Singleton, chases the metaphor of the rainbow from her earliest childhood memories in the church to today’s rainbow clad “twirly” boys and “dykes on bikes.” Singleton guides the audience through the very personal journey of an American Black Midwest Queer Trans-person and her quest for the symbol of hope and ‘everlasting inclusion.’
