This is our annual Unity Picnic which is open to the ENTIRE GLBTQI & Allied Community!

Saturday, June 5, 2010 — RAIN OR SHINE!

Food. Games. Conversation. Community. Prizes. And more!

The Unity Picnic is open to everybody, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to hang out, relax,
enjoy some great bbq and picnic-style food, friends and conversation!

Please bring a picnic-style dish to share, and your own drinks**
**alcohol is not permitted in the park
(bring a chair, sun block and your family and friends)!

TransOhio provides hotdogs/hamburgers/chicken.
If you’re vegetarian or vegan (please bring your own ‘main’ entrée), we’ll make sure that grill space is available for you!

Volunteers needed for setup, end of day cleanup and general picnic stuff!

Saturday, February 27, 2010: SPUDFEST! A fundraiser for TransOhio! 12pm-4pm. $7 gets you a baked potato (load it with your favorite toppings), soda/water, raffle ticket and entertainment! Fun for the entire family! North Congregational UCC in Columbus.

Sunday, February, 28, 2010: Toledo Transgender Support Meeting. 2pm. The Village Church in Toledo. Facilitated by TransOhio. This will be the first meeting of this Toledo group. Email TransOhio@gmail.com for information.

3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium: Call for Presenters

We’re pleased to announce that our 3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium will be held the weekend of August 13-15, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio!

3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium: Call for Presenters!

We are currently accepting program proposals to be presented at the 3rd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium to be held August 13-15, 2010!

This year we are expanding our symposium this year to include:

Friday, August 13th: Provider’s Day
Explicitly for medical, legal, and social work professionals (CLEs/CLUs)

Saturday, August 14th: General Conference
Covering a broad range of interests throughout the community

Sunday, August 15th: General Conference
Continuation of programs with a diversity of topics

Proposals can be for a seminar, presentation, panel, workshop, discussion group, activity and/or performance space, fellowship activity, arts and crafts, etc.

We will seriously consider all submissions, and will give preference to fresh ideas. So don’t be shy, and think outside the box! Please fill out this form as it will appear for publication. The information that you submit will be used on the conference website, in advance publicity, and in the program book.

Keep in mind that Friday’s program is geared toward the continued education of service providers. Please indicate in the space provided whether you have presented the topic before, and if CLEs/CLUs were offered with attendance.

Depending on scheduling, we may request that you present both Friday and Saturday if the topic will also benefit the larger community, and we will consider this as space allows.

TransOhio: 2009 in Review

2009 has been a busy year for TransOhio. It never ceases to amaze us how fast time flies and how much can happen within 12 months.  

Here’s a quick overview of some of the work TransOhio has done as an organization and the work the TransOhio board has done individually:

In 2009, TransOhio…

  • received over 300 calls to our office for resources, support and information
  • distributed over 8,000 copies of our Transgender 101 publication
  • published another year of our monthly TransOhio newsletter
  • tabled at the Columbus and Cincinnati Pride events
  • hosted “Blurring the Lines of Gender” art work by Briden Cole Schueren
  • hosted the 2nd Annual TransOhio Transgender & Ally Symposium (Keynote Speaker, Helen Boyd)
  • hosted Fabulously Fluid: A Evening of Performance, Music, Comedy and Spoken Word
  • sponsored and had attendance at Equality Ohio’s Lobby for Equality Day
  • sponsored and had attendance at the Candidates Night for the Central Ohio GLBT Community
  • hosted the 3rd Annual Unity Picnic in June
  • hosted the 3rd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner
  • hosted the 3rd Annual Christmas Day Gathering
  • hosted the 11th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance in Columbus
  • joined as a member organization of the Equality Federation
  • sponsored a TransOhio booth at Ohio Lesbian Festival
  • facilitated the weekly TransFusion group at Kaleidoscope Youth Center
  • particpated in a Fireside Chat with Ohio’s First Lady, Francis Strickland
  • hosted the Midsummer (and Midwinter) Night’s ‘T’: Transgender Panel for Community Leaders
  • worked with Equality Ohio and Central Ohio transgender advocates to create a state-wide policy  “Declaration of Gender Change” for the Ohio BMV
  • hosted monthly support groups & meetings
  • took a field trip to The Apothecary Shops to see how testosterone and forms of estrogen are compounded
  • started a new program: Partners’ Discussion Group facilitated by Sarah, Ellen and Ariel

  • presented “Why Diversity Matters to AFSCMEA – Diversity awareness and application: The Gender Continuum to AFL-CIO / AFSCME Ohio Council 8
  • provided written Proponent Testimony for Ohio legislators in support of (EHEA) Equal Housing and Employment Act (H.B. 176)
  • provided proponent testimony for Columbus City Council and Civil Rights Commission for adding “gender identity and expression” to Columbus Civil Rights Code
  • attended and spoke at state-wide screenings of Call Me Malcom
  • wrote “Chaz Bono’s Transition: How Can You Be an Ally to Transgender People?” for DiversityInc.com
  • continued UnitedENDA Committee work
  • joined the Equality Ohio Public Policy Committee as a committee member
  • joined the United Way of Central Ohio Affinity Steering Committee as a committee member
  • spoke about being transgender and a resident of Ohio at the TransOhio Fireside Chat with the First Lady of Ohio, Francis Strickland

  • graduated from the Pride Leadership program (cycle 2) of the United Way of Central Ohio
  • presented to the OhioHealth Corporate Diversity Council – Transgender and Healthcare
  • spoke about being transgender and a resident of Ohio at the TransOhio Fireside Chat with the First Lady of Ohio, Francis Strickland
  • presented to the OhioHealth Preserve, Diversity & Inclusion Committee – Transgender and Healthcare
  • graduation speaker at Pride Leadership (cycle 2)
  • keynote speaker at Bowling Green State University – Transcendence Gender Awareness Days – Transgender and Identities
  • spoke at Midsummer (and Midwinter) Night’s ‘T’: Transgender Panel for Community Leaders
